A 'veteran' - whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including his/her life'.
This year, when filling out your Christmas cards, take one (or more) cards and send it to this address:
A Recovering American Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20307-5001
WHO ARE WE: The 170-acre Kilcer family farm has been in the same family since 1952. It was a dairy farm until 1991, when it was converted to a crop farm, owned by Joseph Kilcer.
It has a conservation easement with Scenic Hudson in place which will assist in coordinating with local agencies regarding forever protection as a working farm and preclude subdivision and development.
Linda and Joseph Kilcer want to refocus the farm into one which will serve our most valuable resource – our homeless veterans. Their vision combines providing a sanctuary and utilizing the farm and farm life style as a therapeutic means of healing.
Click on the 1886 VETERANS PROGRAMS page above for a complete description of the entire project.
At this time of year, our first thoughts are of food - for the entire community and the other five counties surrounding Columbia. See the separate page above labelled 1886 Comm Food Pantry.
